A ten-member delegation from Uzbekistan, led by Yusupalieva Gulnora Akmalovna, Deputy Head of the Ministry of Health and Head of the Department of Science, Education and Innovations and the Department of Development of Higher and Secondary Medical Education, visited the Ludwigshafen University of Business and Society (HWG LU) on Tuesday, February 13, 2024. The aim of her visit was to explore opportunities for collaboration in the field of nursing and midwifery science.
The visit took place in the context of the German-Uzbek health project, implemented by the Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The delegation showed great interest in the study programs of Department IV of the HWG LU. They were particularly interested in the study programs in the fields of nursing and midwifery. During their visit, the guests presented the Uzbek healthcare system and explained in detail how midwives and nurses are trained there. It was emphasized that academization in Uzbekistan, a country with 38 million inhabitants, is not yet very advanced. To date, only 10 midwives and nurses have obtained a doctorate.
A particular focus of future cooperation was on joint research and the pedagogical training and further education of teachers in the two healthcare professions. The skills lab at the HWG LU attracted particular interest, as innovative educational concepts are being developed here.
Kerstin Gallenstein, Head of the International Office at the HWG LU, supported the visit with her expertise and accompanied the discussions on possibilities for future collaboration. A partnership between the HWG LU's Midwifery Department and the Republican Center for Advanced Training of Nurses, Midwives and Pharmacists in Uzbekistan has already been in place for over a year. This partnership is now to be integrated into the existing "Eastern Partnerships" funding program of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). In addition, Kerstin Gallenstein and Professor Michaela Michel-Schuldt PhD are currently seeking financial support within the framework of Erasmus+ and the GIZ's hospital partnerships in order to further promote cooperation.
The Uzbek guests invited the HWG LU participants from the fields of nursing and midwifery to make a return visit to Tashkent, the Uzbek capital.
On Wednesday, February 14, 2024, they visited the delivery room and the maternity ward of St. Marienkrankenhaus Ludwigshafen(https://www.st-marienkrankenhaus.de/), which cooperates with HWG LU in the practical training of future midwives.
