Ludwigshafen University of Business and Society (HWG LU) is among the 55 universities selected for funding in the second round of the federal-state initiative "Innovative University" with a joint application on the topic of "EMPOWER - Living Cooperation and Shaping Innovation". This means that the transfer alliance - consisting of Mainz University of Applied Sciences, Mainz Catholic University of Applied Sciences, Bingen University of Applied Sciences, Worms University of Applied Sciences and HWG LU, including the Center for Quality Development and Assurance at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz - is expected to receive a total funding volume of around EUR 13.4 million for the funding period of five years from the beginning of 2023.
The federal-state initiative "Innovative University" to promote the research-based transfer of ideas, knowledge and technology is intended to support universities of applied sciences and smaller universities in strengthening their strategic role in the regional innovation system. The funding initiative was carried out in two selection rounds. The second selection round (from 2023 to 2027) was open to universities that had already received funding in the first selection round as well as universities that had not previously received funding. In total, the federal and state governments are providing up to 285 million euros for the second funding round.
Together with five other universities in Rhineland-Palatinate, the HWG LU submitted the joint application "EMPOWER - Living Cooperation and Shaping Innovation" for review. This has now been selected for funding from among 163 applicant universities as part of an expert-led competitive process.
The central objectives of the cross-university transfer alliance EMPOWER are to promote agile, future-oriented knowledge transfer, to foster cooperation on a regional and supra-regional level and to develop innovations. This is to be initiated and sustainably implemented in joint transformation processes with existing external network partners, particularly in Rheinhessen/Vorderpfalz. Another focus of the EMPOWER transfer alliance is internal. The aim is to create an overarching network of the participating universities in a transfer hub in order to facilitate knowledge and expertise for interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary issues and problem-solving in different disciplines.
The transfer alliance consists of Mainz University of Applied Sciences, Mainz Catholic University of Applied Sciences, Bingen University of Applied Sciences, Worms University of Applied Sciences and HWG LU, including the Center for Quality Development and Assurance at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. As part of the complex interdisciplinary project, the HWG LU is focusing on the topic of "NEW WORK", initiated and led by Prof. Dr. Jutta Rump, Director of the renowned Institute for Employment and Employability IBE at Ludwigshafen University of Applied Sciences. Prof. Dr. Rainer Völker from the university-affiliated Institute for Management and Innovation IMI and Andrea Kuhn from the Health Research Network are also involved. The HWG LU is also networked with the other universities in the network, including in the "HEALTH" Departments of Prof. Dr. Esther Berkemer and Prof. Dr. Monika Greening (Department of Social and Health Care) and "CYBER SECURITY" by Prof. Dr. Haio Röckle (Department of Services and Consulting).
The project is scheduled to start at the beginning of 2023 with a planned funding period of five years. The requested funding volume of the overall application/transfer alliance over this period amounts to around € 13.4 million, of which HWG LU is expected to receive just under € 3.2 million in funding according to the application.
