A new Bachelor's programme will start at the Department of Social and Health Care in the winter semester 2021/2022: The dual Bachelor's degree programme "Midwifery Science" under the direction of Professor Dr Nina Knape is the only midwifery degree programme in Rhineland-Palatinate to date as part of the academization of midwifery training, which has been in force since 2020. Applications for the accredited program will be possible from May via the university's application portal. Prospective students can find out more about the new degree programs and the new requirements for midwifery training at an online information event on Friday, 29 January 2021 from 15:00-17:00. Registration for the information event via: https://www.veranstaltungen.hwg-lu.de/event/online-infotag-hebammenwissenschaft-studieren
Midwives care for women and their families from the beginning of pregnancy to the end of breastfeeding. They accompany and support women in this special phase of life, independently conduct physiological births and are responsible for the examination and care of newborns and infants. With their work, they make a significant contribution to the health care of women and their families in both medical and psychosocial areas. Until now, midwifery training has been an apprenticeship. Since the Midwifery Reform Act came into force in 2020, a Bachelor's degree has been compulsory for midwives-to-be, with a transitional period until the end of 2022.
From the coming winter semester, the new dual degree programs "Midwifery Science" will therefore start, which the Ludwigshafen University of Business and Society offers in cooperation with practice facilities (clinics), freelance midwives and birth centers as the only location in Rhineland-Palatinate to date. The cooperating practice facilities are currently the Westpfalz-Klinikum Kaiserslautern, the Diakonissen-Stiftungs-Krankenhaus Speyer, the Klinikum Worms, the Universitätsklinikum Mannheim, the Universitätsklinikum Heidelberg, the St. Marienkrankenhaus Ludwigshafen and the Klinikum Mutterhaus der Borromäerinnen Trier.
Prospective students can apply to the university from the beginning of May 2021. After successful examination of the documents, applicants will receive a provisional admission certificate from the university, which they can then use to apply for a practical placement at a cooperating clinic. Remuneration is paid throughout the course.
The full-time course lasts 7 semesters and ends with a state professional qualification as a midwife and a Bachelor of Science. A school-leaving certificate, university entrance qualification or completed training in nursing are prerequisites for admission to the course.
The Ludwigshafen University of Business and Society has many years of experience in the academic training of midwives with the dual degree program "Midwifery", which has already been in existence for 10 years. In contrast to the previous study program, which is only aimed at midwives who are already certified and trainees at the midwifery schools in Heidelberg, Lahr, Speyer and Saarbrücken, the new dual degree program "Midwifery Science" is a primary qualifying degree program and will replace the "Midwifery" degree program in the medium term.
The Department of Social and Health Sciences is offering an online information event on this new degree program for all prospective students on Friday, 29.01.21, from 15:00 to 17:00.
