University council member and lecturer Dr. Jörg Breitenbach elected to the AIMBE College of Fellows "into the elite of medical and biological engineering

As the Washington-basedAmerican Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) recently announced to the press, University Council member and lecturer Dr. Jörg Breitenbach was elected to the AIMBE College of Fellows "among the elite of medical and bioengineering" at the end of March 2020. College membership recognizes engineers and scientists in the medical or biological sector who have made outstanding contributions to "research and practice in engineering and medicine," "pioneering work in new and emerging fields of technology," or "important advances in the traditional fields of medical and bioengineering," and is among the highest honors that can be bestowed on medical and biological engineers, according to AIMBE. In the case of Dr. Jörg Breitenbach, the College of Fellows honored his "outstanding contributions to the development and commercialization of patient-centered polymeric dosage forms in infectious diseases and neurological interventions."

Dr. Jörg Breitenbach studied chemistry and received his doctorate from Friedrich-Wilhelms University in Bonn, Germany. He worked in Finland as a fellow of the Finnish Academy of Sciences. He then joined the polymer research department of BASF SE and graduated in business administration from the Academy of Management and Economics in Mannheim. He moved to Knoll AG and then became head of a division for innovative dosage forms. He then headed the business unit at Abbott GmbH & Co KG, based in Ludwigshafen. Until the end of 2019, he was responsible for global product development of the pharmaceutical division in the U.S. group of Abbott Laboratories and chairman of the supervisory board of Abbott Laboratories GmbH.

Dr. Jörg Breitenbach has founded several companies in the life science sector and today heads a start-up company himself. He is also a member of the Editorial Board of the European Journal of Pharmaceutics and Biopharmaceutics.

The American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering is a nonprofit organization founded in 1991 and headquartered in Washington. It represents 50,000 medical and biomedical engineers, as well as academic institutions, private industry, and professional engineering societies.
