New bachelor's degree program in nursing starts in the winter semester under the direction of Prof. Dr. Joachim von der Heide.

With the reform of the Nursing Professions Act (PflBG) in 2020, universities in Germany were given the task of training nursing professionals at universities for the first time and thus qualifying them for the nursing profession. Accordingly, the Ludwigshafen University of Business and Society (HWG LU) will be offering the Bachelor's degree course in Nursing (B.Sc.) for the first time from the winter semester 2022/2023. Prof. Dr. Joachim von der Heide, who has held the professorship for Nursing Science at the Department of Social and Health Sciences since February 2022, is in charge of the degree programs.

About the Nursing degree program:
The Bachelor's degree program in Nursing (B.Sc.) leads to two degrees in seven semesters: state certification as a nursing specialist and the academic degree Bachelor of Science. The program is aimed at people with a qualification for university entrance and an interest in studying nursing at a university. The full-time course is practice-integrated, i.e. theoretical and practical phases alternate. Students learn at the university, in a so-called skills lab and in cooperating healthcare facilities.

The degree programs are designed to be generalist, i.e. nurses are trained for all forms of process-oriented care: from paediatric care to nursing to geriatric care. The study programme is thus oriented towards international developments for academicized nursing. "The HWG LU is taking an important step towards the professionalization of nursing by establishing primary qualification degree programs in nursing. High-quality nursing requires a theory-based academic education in order to meet the requirements of the highly complex nursing professions and the responsibility in the field of public health," explains course director Prof. Dr. Joachim von der Heide and adds: "Students learn to transfer current findings from nursing research directly to their work with the people they care for, to question the common understanding of nursing and its theories and to find innovative solutions for complex, unforeseeable problems in nursing practice."

It will be possible to apply to start the course in the winter semester 2022/2023 from May 2022. The next online information events for prospective students will take place on March 15 and April 14.
