Following the start of the first semester on November 2, 2020, more students are enrolled at the Ludwigshafen University of Business and Society (HWG LU) than ever before: With a record number of over 1,100 students in the first semester, the total number of students has also risen to an unprecedented 4,800 students - an increase of around 300 students compared to the previous year.
The university management attributes the unexpectedly high increase in student numbers in part to the changed acceptance procedure for applicants in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. However, with a view to the number of first semester students at other universities in the state, the increase also shows the attractiveness of the courses on offer in Ludwigshafen: "The current total student number of over 4,800 students proves and rewards the excellent work of our Departments and programs," emphasizes University President Prof. Dr. Peter Mudra. At the same time, however, the further, in some cases considerable, increase in student numbers is also a huge challenge - and not just in terms of the capacity of the allotted room sizes in classroom teaching. For this reason, the university's Executive Board is clearly in favor of consolidating student numbers in the coming semesters.
According to preliminary figures, around 1,100 new students started their first semester in the 2020/2021 winter semester - 861 Bachelor's students, 162 consecutive Master's students and 86 continuing education Master's students. In accordance with the resolutions passed by the federal states and the federal government, education has been taking place in virtual form throughout since November 2. As a precautionary measure, the welcoming ceremony for first-year students on 26 October 2020 was also held as a recorded live event via the university's YouTube channel(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wfjp30zjQMw).
