The Bachelor's degree course in Viticulture & Oenology starts the new academic year on August 2, 2021 with 53 dual students. The coronavirus pandemic has therefore not had a negative impact on the number of applicants. Compared to previous years, the number of students has increased once again.
Students at the Weincampus have always benefited from small groups and individual support, which is an even greater advantage during the pandemic. "We are proud that even in this difficult situation, students at the Weincampus Neustadt are able to complete their studies within the standard period of study and that all important content is taught both theoretically and practically," says course director Prof. Dr. Dominik Durner.
Thanks to the rapid adaptation to the new conditions, attendance registration using QR codes and the division into smaller groups, a lot has been made possible. One major advantage is the cooperation with DLR Rheinpfalz. Most lectures will take place in the DLR auditorium, where larger groups can also teach and learn together while observing social distancing rules.
"For the winter semester, we are planning normal operations as far as possible with all students returning to campus, which is also what the students are eagerly hoping for. We created the necessary structures early on and our hygiene concept has worked. If many more people are vaccinated, then I am confident that it will be possible to have a full presence at the Neustadt Wine Campus in the winter semester," explains Wilhelma Metzler, Managing Director of the Neustadt Wine Campus.
Mayor Weigel welcomes the new students in the town hall
A highlight of the first block of studies will be the welcoming of the new students by Lord Mayor Weigel. The city leader takes time for the new students at the Neustadt Wine Campus, many of whom are new to the city. On August 18, Lord Mayor Marc Weigel will welcome the new prosemester students in the council chamber of the town hall.
The dual study program
The dual study program in viticulture and oenology combines a university education with the traditional two-year training as a winemaker. The training phase in the company lasts a total of 24 months. Students spend 15 months of this at the beginning in the company to gain practical experience.
The lecture times, which are tailored to the needs of the wine industry, ensure that the course can be studied and allow students to work in the training companies during the grape harvest and in the most important months of grape and wine production. The course is divided into the following specializations
- Viticulture / Plant Protection,
- oenology / sensory analysis and
- Marketing / Business Administration.
