Students from the East Asia Institute who experienced the beginnings of the Corona pandemic firsthand in China, South Korea or Japan have compiled their country-specific impressions and observations in a working paper and have just made it available to the public.
Very early in 2020, when COVID-19 was not yet playing any role in the world's consciousness, OAI students who were in China and other Asian countries at the time were already confronted with the epidemic. They personally experienced how the authorities and other institutions in their host countries, as well as the people there, reacted, and how these reactions influenced further events, which quickly became worldwide.
The students of the 6th semester "International Business Management (East Asia)", who took their year abroad in Asia in 2019/20, have now compiled their experience in a nearly 70-page working paper of the university-affiliated East Asia Institute (OAI) and made it available to the public on the institute's homepage (https://ostasieninstitut.com/oai-covid-papers/).
How did China, Japan, and South Korea deal with the unexpected situation? What measures were and are being taken to revive the economy and establish some confidence among the population? - These and other questions are explored in the OAI Working Papers. Geographic, economic, and social aspects of the situation at the time were analyzed.
The pandemic continues to have a firm grip on the world. The different ways in which many countries, especially in Asia, dealt with it and its consequences are only slowly coming into focus. However, these differences may have a significant impact on what happens next. Early, first-hand experiences of this provide valuable clues for further research, and the snapshots taken at the time offer an exciting opportunity for comparison with further developments and the current state of affairs.
