Practical business informatics project with the Ludwigshafen City Library

Third-semester students on the Master's degree course in Information Systems with a focus on Data Science & Consulting at Ludwigshafen University of Business and Society (HWG LU) once again carried out a collaborative project with Ludwigshafen City Library on the topic of "Smart Library" last winter semester. The project investigated the possible applications of smartphone and tablet-based avatar solutions for library assistance and the technical implementation options for navigation solutions in the city library. Not only were concrete implementation concepts developed, but two prototype applications were also realized for concept testing: An interactive library avatar with AI connection for media research and media recommendations as well as a navigation solution for media search based on iBeacons, a method originally developed by Apple for localization in enclosed spaces, based on Bluetooth Low Energy radio technology.

At the project's Degree, the students presented their results in the Makerspace at Ludwigshafen City Library. Project manager Prof. Dr. Frank Thomé was very satisfied: "In this collaborative project, our students have used the latest information and communication technology in an innovative way and demonstrated the potential for change that such technology can bring to the library sector. In just three months, two forward-looking concepts and prototypes for library assistance were developed, which will create tangible added value for the Ludwigshafen City Library in the future."

Those involved in the project on the City Library side also drew an all-round positive conclusion: "We were impressed by the students' ingenuity and the impressive implementation in such a short space of time," said Tanja Weißmann, Head of the City Library. "The students really did a great job, which will contribute to our technical development," added her colleague Tabea Krämer.

The Chief Digital Officer of the City of Ludwigshafen, Daniel Meyer, also took part in the final presentations. He was also impressed by the results of the cooperation project and summarized: "The Smart Library project shows how digital technologies can improve access to education and information in an innovative and everyday way. The close cooperation with HWG LU not only strengthens the transfer of knowledge, but also focuses on the concrete benefits for citizens - an important step towards a sustainable and digital urban society."

The cooperation project with the Ludwigshafen City Library is just one example of many exciting cooperation projects of the Master's degree course in Information Systems: at the same time as the "Smart Library" project with the City Library, for example, another group of students carried out a practical project on the topic of the "Internet of Things" in the "Energy and Building Management" application area. Based on the energy-efficient data transmission technology Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN), a digital building twin was developed as a result of the project, which can be used to monitor the indoor climate and energy consumption of a building in real time.
