Partnership between Rhineland-Palatinate and Rwanda: exchange in the field of midwifery and nursing science at the HWG LU

From April 7 to 11, 2025, Ludwigshafen University of Business and Society (HWG LU) welcomed Ms. Theophila Niyonsenga, midwife and educator at the partner university Ruli Higher Institute of Health in Ruli, Rwanda (Province: North, District: Gakenke), for an intensive professional exchange. The focus of the visit was a joint dialog on the further development of the interprofessional skills and simulation center at both universities and the international transfer of knowledge in the field of midwifery and nursing science.

Ms. Niyonsenga took part in a number of teaching events, clinical visits and discussion formats. The practice-oriented exchange in the Skills and Simulation Center in particular provided valuable impulses for both sides: from training sessions on assisted births to the simulation of complex obstetric situations such as breech deliveries. The focus was on capacity building and strengthening practical training methods that enable students to prepare realistically for everyday working life.

Ms Niyonsenga was accompanied by professors and lecturers from HWG LU, among others, who were highly committed to the program. Insights into the German healthcare system, such as a visit to the maternity ward at St. Marienkrankenhaus Ludwigshafen, as well as discussions on nursing studies in Germany and Rwanda rounded off the professional program.

The visit also allowed for cultural exchange, for example during city tours of Mannheim and Mainz, as well as discussions with Layla Engeln, Managing Director of the Rhineland-Palatinate-Rwanda Partnership, and Erika Hauß-Delker from the Rwanda Hospital Friends' Association.

"The mutual insight into training realities and healthcare systems not only promotes professional understanding, but also cultural respect and global thinking," summarized the participants.

The visit marks a further step in the partnership between the HWG Ludwigshafen and the Ruli Higher Institute of Health - with the common goal of sustainably strengthening midwifery and nursing studies through international exchange.
