Study objective

The course is geared towards the complex requirements of a dynamically developing professional field.
Students acquire midwifery, health and social science as well as business management and specialist pedagogical skills during the course of their studies. The skills acquired are intended to promote the professional and independent practice of the profession by graduates. In this way, midwives and maternity nurses are enabled to design, reflect on and evaluate their work according to the recognized state of the art. Furthermore, they acquire the ability to systematically analyze and solve problems and to critically reflect on ethical issues.
In addition, the degree program allows students to combine their professional practice and their studies by choosing an elective module. These compulsory elective modules on 'practical guidance' or 'leadership and management of a functional unit', in combination with the further course of study and two years of professional experience, are recognized as equivalent to further training in Rhineland-Palatinate.

Career prospects and fields of activity are

  • Original midwifery work as a reflective practitioner
  • Collaboration in networked care models
  • Taking on conceptual and/or managerial tasks
  • Quality development and process management
  • Professional policy fields of work
  • Practice supervision and guidance
  • Further academic qualification at national and international level
The Ludwigshafen University of Business and Society offers a consecutive Master's degree program ( MAIV ) for graduates of the Bachelor's degree programs in Midwifery and Nursing.

Study organization and structure

The course is designed as a 7-semester course, which is divided into two study phases. The first study phase (1st-4th semester) is integrated into training or part-time with one fixed study day per week. During this study phase, the basics of midwifery science and its related sciences are taught. The second study phase (5th-7th semester) is completed as a full-time course. In addition to the presentation of various concepts for scientifically sound and professional midwifery work, the focus is on the implementation of self-selected research projects, the specialist pedagogical or business management focus through the compulsory elective module (practice guidance or management and leadership of a functional unit) and the preparation of the Bachelor's thesis. The degree program has a modular structure. The module structure can be found in the module handbook . Each module concludes with a final module examination.
