Internship semester abroad

Are you planning to complete your compulsory semester abroad as an internship with a company or public institution in a country in the CEE/CIS region?

The following information is intended to help you prepare for and follow up on your internship abroad and facilitate the recognition of your semester abroad.

The compulsory semester abroad usually takes place in the 6th semester of the IME degree programs. In order for your mandatory semester abroad to be recognized, you must complete a number of formalities before and after the practical semester abroad.

Before the practical semester abroad


You must fulfill the following minimum requirements:

  • Participation in the semester abroad seminar (all dates)
  • Proof that you have passed all module examinations in the first three semesters of study
  • English B2 certificate
  • Russian A1 certificate
  • Application for approval of the internship abroad

-       Choose a topic for the internship report and coordinate it with the module coordinator

-       Fill in the application form

-       Enclose internship contract

-       Submit to the department at least 4 weeks before the start of the internship semester

-       Approval by the internship coordinator in the department

After the practical semester abroad


You must complete the following formalities for recognition of the semester abroad:

  • Proof of internship activity: a certificate from the internship site stating the type and duration (start/end) of the activity and the areas of work completed.
    The duration of the internship shall be at least 20 complete calendar weeks without interruption. The scope of work should be at least 20 working hours per week and the work should be carried out in the following areas in particular:

-       Management (esp. strategic/international)

-       Marketing/Sales

-       Market research/market communication

-       Personnel and Organization

-       Procurement/Logistics

-       Controlling

  • Written documentation: a two-part practical report of at least 20 DIN A4 pages:

-       an experience report of at least 5 pages, usually in English

-       an essay on a subject-specific topic of at least 15 pages

-       Submission deadline: no later than the 1st week of lectures of the following semester to the assistant of the department

-       Form: in bound print version

  • Presentations (including an electronic version) on the practical semester abroad as part of a block course in the following semester
  • Submission of the completed questionnaire about the semester abroad
  • Application for recognition of the practical semester abroad

All documents both before and after the semester abroad must be submitted to the department.
