Germany Scholarship 2022/2023: 39 scholarships from 19 sponsors

by Andrea Döring

Time is money. Many students lack both. A scholarship can help them to successfully complete their studies despite this. On Wednesday, 28.09.2022, Professor Dr. Gunther Piller, President of the Ludwigshafen University of Business and Society, symbolically presented 39 students with the Deutschlandstipendium scholarship. 300 euros per month will flow into the accounts of the young people, who have distinguished themselves through good grades and social commitment, among other things, for one year. Companies, institutions and private donors finance the support with 150 euros per month, the other half is provided by the federal government. The Deutschlandstipendium has been in existence for eleven years. Ludwigshafen University of Applied Sciences has been participating in the Germany-wide program for just as long. Many sponsors took the time to celebrate with their protégés in the university's auditorium and foyer.

Being quick where the fire is. Logistics student Felix Fillibeck uses his skills not only at the university, but also at the volunteer fire department in Neustadt. The 22-year-old finances his studies with a job as a working student, among other things. "With the scholarship, I will have to work less during the exam phase and will be able to study more," he says happily. Together with his mother Jutta Fillibeck and his girlfriend Michelle Kalina, he looks out for his sponsors, Mr. and Mrs. Nick, whom he has never met before. After the ceremony, the five of them got together.

"We want to give the students the gift of time," says pharmacist Ute Nick, explaining her commitment. "Because the young people deserve it," adds chemist Bernhard Nick. The couple has three grown-up children. "It's difficult for many children to finance their studies," says Ute Nick. After the toast, Felix Fillibeck unwraps the package that University President Piller presented to the students along with the scholarship certificate. "The melting clock by Dalí", he can immediately classify the gift. "The Persistence of Memory" or "The Soft Clocks" is the name of the best-known painting by surrealist painter Salvador Dalí from 1931.

According to Dalí, melting a Camembert on a hot day inspired him to create this work. Leah Röhm saves cheese, sausage, fruit and many other foods from spoiling. The 23-year-old student of International Business Administration with a focus on management is involved in food sharing on a voluntary basis. "We've already saved 1900 kilograms of food," she says proudly. But she is also involved in supporting foreign students and at the university information days. Next semester, she wants to complete an internship abroad in Ireland. "Apartments are very expensive in Ireland," she reports. The money from electrical wholesaler Moster, her sponsor and the federal government will help to finance the internship.

"We don't choose, we just pay," explains Rüdiger Burkhard, Head of Training at the Siemens company health insurance fund, with a wink. Together with his protégé, health economics student Susan Claire Christ, 28, and her professor Dr. Manfred Erbsland, he waits at the lovingly decorated bar tables for the ceremony. An independent committee selects the scholarship holders from the applications. There are many more women than men. But the sponsors don't just have to pay, they can also gain through their commitment. Getting to know future specialists at an early stage, deepening the network between business and academia, living social responsibility, becoming better known and claiming tax deductions for funding are just some of the benefits that the university uses to promote the program.

Sponsored and sponsors are delighted. "The commitment of the young people makes us happy. I can look positively to the future," says Ute Nick, describing her feelings after the ceremony. Many people are very pessimistic about the world situation. But Nick believes: "The young people will find a way to shape the future."
