On March 15, 2022, Prof. Dr. Gunther Piller received his certificate of appointment as President of the Ludwigshafen University of Business and Society (HWG LU). The former Dean of the Department of Economics at Mainz University of Applied Sciences is now succeeding Professor Dr. Peter Mudra.
With the presentation of his certificate of appointment from the hands of Science Minister Clemens Hoch, Prof. Dr. Gunther Piller now heads the university in Ludwigshafen as President. The 58-year-old theoretical physicist, business information scientist and former Dean of the Department of Economics at Mainz University of Applied Sciences, who holds a doctorate and habilitation, was elected President at the Senate meeting on October 20, 2021 and accepted the office on the same day.
"University President Peter Mudra has successfully led the Ludwigshafen University of Business and Society, developed it further and networked it well in the city, the region and the state. I look forward to continuing this work as part of the team," said Prof. Dr. Gunther Piller on taking office.
The ceremonial handover of the presidency from the previous incumbent Prof. Dr. Peter Mudra to his successor Prof. Dr. Gunther Piller will take place on Wednesday, March 23, 2022, in a festive setting in the auditorium. Peter Mudra, who has held the presidency since March 2010, did not stand for re-election after 12 years in office, but will remain involved in education and research at the university.

Gunther Piller, born in 1963, studied physics at the University of Regensburg, where he subsequently completed his doctorate in theoretical physics. Piller completed his doctorate with distinction in 1992. He then worked for almost two years as a research assistant at the University of Adelaide, Australia. In 1999, he completed his habilitation in theoretical physics at the Technical University of Munich. During this time, Gunther Piller completed research stays at Stanford University, USA, the University of Washington, Seattle, USA, Tel Aviv University, Israel, and the Landau Institute Moscow, Russia, among others. From 2002 to 2008, Piller then worked at SAP SE, most recently as Director of Product Management in the area of service-oriented software systems and Software-as-a-Service.
In 2008, Prof. Dr. Gunther Piller was appointed Professor of Business Informatics at Mainz University of Applied Sciences. Since 2020, he has been Dean of the Department of Business and Economics. Prior to this, Piller was already involved in the development of the Department as Vice Dean and was instrumental in promoting research activities, for example. He and his team conducted research in the field of digitalization in a number of mostly publicly funded research projects. He also supervises several cooperative doctorates. In October 2021, Prof. Dr. Gunther Piller was elected President of the Ludwigshafen University of Business and Society and officially took office on 15 March 2022.
