In the last few semesters, the early and optimistically planned children's university dates, which the young students were already looking forward to, had to be canceled again and again due to Corona. In order to avoid another complete cancellation in the current winter semester, the organizational team decided to take a risk and offer the children's university in an online format for the first time. This was preceded by consultations with the lecturers, as not every lecture topic planned in person can be easily transferred to the online world. Fortunately, Prof. Dr. Birgit Angermayer immediately agreed to hold her lectures via Zoom.
Last Wednesday, a dozen bright participants between the ages of eight and 13 gathered in Prof. Angermayer's Zoom room to learn more about the topic "How much does a month cost? Create an expense report and you'll be amazed". Everyone had already received a worksheet in advance, which they used to determine the various income and expenditure items for their own Financial Department. In the lectures themselves, the financial expert then explained in an age-appropriate way how an average household income is made up, what it is used for, what the difference between fixed and variable costs is and how you can keep an eye on your expenses, etc. and was always careful to ensure that the young participants were able to contribute their ideas and suggestions. This also led to a lively and instructive exchange online. As a small reward for their participation, the ambitious young students were sent a piggy bank afterwards.
All in all, the lecturer and the organizing team were highly satisfied with the course and the interaction rate of the first web-based children's university event - an all-round successful online premiere, was the unanimous conclusion.
The next online lectures in the current children's university series will take place on February 9, when Dr. Melanie Hoffmeister will introduce the children to the "Big Bang, quarks and what holds the world together". Registration is still possible at https://www.veranstaltungen.hwg-lu.de/event/kinderuni-vorlesung-1-1-1-1.
The program for the summer semester will then be available in the course of March in the events section of the HWG LU homepage(https://www.veranstaltungen.hwg-lu.de). Despite the successful online premiere, everyone involved is looking forward to these lectures hopefully finally taking place on site at the university and in a "real" lecture room again.
