Sustainability study programs at HWG LU about to start

Ludwigshafen University of Applied Sciences is launching two new study programs on the topic of "Sustainability": the Bachelor's degree program "Business Administration with a focus on Sustainability Management" in the winter semester 2024/2025 and the Master's degree program "Sustainability Management" in the summer semester 2025.

It is clear that our way of doing business cannot go on like this. Melting polar ice caps, species extinction and polluted oceans are global threats that the world's governments have so far been unable to get under control. Recent youth studies clearly show that young people see the protection of the environment as one of the most urgent problems of our time. Globally active companies are now also recognizing the need for action, not least here in the metropolitan area Rhine-Neckar. From DAX-listed corporations to medium-sized companies, sustainability is the order of the day.

At the Ludwigshafen University of Business and Society (HWG LU), sustainable management has long been part of many education and study plans. The Department of Management, Controlling, HealthCare is now also launching two new study programs dedicated to the topic: the Bachelor's degree in Business Administration with a focus on Sustainability Management and the Master's degree in Sustainability Management on the newly designed campus in Ludwigshafen-Mundenheim. The two degree programs, headed by Prof. Dr. Nikolas Wölfing and Prof. Dr. Stefan Lacher, specifically combine economic know-how with the skills that companies need to assume their ecological and social responsibility.

The first students on the Bachelor's degree program in Business Administration with a focus on Sustainability Management will start in September 2024 and generally graduate with a Bachelor of Science after seven semesters. In the first three semesters, the focus is on business fundamentals and quantitative methods, as well as soft skills and ethical conduct. The fourth and fifth semesters then delve deeper into sustainability management: the curriculum then includes sustainable supply chains, sustainable finance, resource management and sustainability controlling. In the sixth semester, students can choose to complete a company internship in Germany or abroad or a semester abroad. Applications for the new Bachelor's program are open from mid-April to mid-July 2024.

The "M.Sc. Sustainable Management" Master's degree course is designed for three semesters and is aimed at those interested in gaining further qualifications specifically in the field of sustainability management. The prerequisite is a Bachelor's degree with previous knowledge of business administration. The application portals are scheduled to open in November 2024; the course is expected to start in March 2025.
