Further growth in the field of midwifery science: Dr. Barbara Filsinger takes over professorship

The Department of Midwifery Science at Ludwigshafen University of Business and Society (HWG LU) has had additional expert support since July 2022: Dr. Barbara Filsinger received her certificate of appointment for the professorship "Obstetrics and Maternal and Child Health" at the Department of Social and Health Care at the beginning of the month. Dr. Barbara Filsinger had previously been appointed to the corresponding professorship. "With Dr. Barbara Filsinger, we have gained a colleague with great expertise and a lot of practical experience in the field of gynaecology, obstetrics and perinatology. She has a strong network and is a great asset to our team as well as to the entire university and the young discipline of midwifery science," said a delighted Prof. Nina Knape, Ph.

Dr. med. Barbara Filsinger, born in 1965 in Bruchsal, studied human medicine at the Universities of Erlangen and Freiburg, where she graduated in 1991. Dr. Barbara Filsinger qualified as a specialist in gynaecology and obstetrics in 2000 and has been a perinatologist since 2004. In 2005, she received her doctorate with a thesis on "The value of axillary sonography in breast cancer". Dr. Barbara Filsinger has been closely associated with the region since 2002: first as Managing Senior Physician at the Women's Clinic at Mannheim University Hospital (2002-2005), then as Chief Physician of the Obstetrics Department at St. Marienkrankenhaus Ludwigshafen (2005-2016), as head of the perinatal center and medical director of the midwifery school at the Diakonissen-Stiftungskrankenhaus Speyer (2016-2019) and currently as senior physician at the gynecological clinic of the University Hospital Mannheim and head of the mother-child center there. In addition, the Ludwigshafen resident was a long-standing member and chair of the Perinatal Medicine Expert Commission of the external quality assurance SQ Med-Rheinlad-Palatinate and a member of the Rhineland-Palatinate Obstetrics Round Table of the Ministry of Social Affairs, Labor, Health and Demography. Prof. Dr. Barbara Filsinger is associated with Ludwigshafen through the development of the "Good Start to Childbirth" program. Together with the head of the city's youth welfare office, she contributed to the expansion of early help in Rhineland-Palatinate and throughout Germany as project coordinator. This was followed by a Master of Science degree in Early Life Care at Paracelsus Medical University Salzburg. Barbara Filsinger is currently researching holistic and individualized forms of care during pregnancy with the help of digital media. In addition to medical topics, her education focuses on family health promotion and prevention.

About the dual Bachelor's degree program in Midwifery Science:
The dual Bachelor's degree program in Midwifery Science is a primary qualification and is aimed at all prospective students who want to learn the profession of midwifery. The prerequisite is a qualification for university entrance (Abitur, entrance qualification for universities of applied sciences or a previous qualification recognized as equivalent) or successful completion of vocational training in health and nursing. The theoretical study phases take place at the university and are supplemented by practical learning units in modern skills and simulation rooms. The practical study phases alternate with the theoretical study phases at the clinical and non-clinical cooperation partners: These include practical placements in the delivery room, the antenatal outpatient clinic, the postnatal ward and the children's clinic, as well as non-clinical placements with freelance midwives, in birth centers or midwifery practices. Students receive a salary throughout the course.

The seven-semester course will replace training at midwifery schools in future as a result of the 2019 amendment to the Midwifery Act as part of the academization of the healthcare professions: These will be allowed to start a midwifery training course for the last time in 2022. From 2023, midwives will only be able to learn the profession at colleges and universities. The midwifery science degree program concludes with a Bachelor of Science degree and a state license to practice midwifery .

The dual Bachelor's degree course in Midwifery Science always starts in Ludwigshafen in the winter semester. An application for the winter semester 2023/2024 at the HWG LU is possible from May 2023; an application to the practice partners after receipt of the provisional admission certificate is expected by mid-June 2023.
