The Department of Midwifery Science at Ludwigshafen University of Business and Society (HWG LU) has had expert support since March 2022: Michaela Michel-Schuldt, Ph.D., Master of Science Midwifery and Midwife, has been appointed to the Chair of Midwifery Science in the Department of Social and Health Care. Previously, Michaela Michel-Schuldt was appointed to the corresponding professorship. "With Michaela Michel-Schuldt, we have gained a colleague with great international expertise and a lot of practical experience for the university. She will further advance our still young discipline," says Prof. Nina Knape, Ph.D., Director of Studies.
Prof. Michaela Michel-Schuldt, Ph.D., born in 1977, initially studied ethnology, philosophy and education before successfully completing her training as a midwife at the School of Midwifery at Justus Liebig University Giessen in 2003. Michel-Schuldt then worked first as an attending midwife at the Heilig-Geist-Hospital in Bingen and then as an international midwife at Malteser International. There she was in charge of the mother-child health component in two refugee camps in Thailand, managed the maternal and reproductive health program component in Myanmar in the border region with Bangladesh and provided emergency aid after a cyclone in south-western Myanmar. This was followed by a Bachelor's degree in Midwifery at Glasgow Caledonian University, Scotland, and a European Master of Science degree at Hannover Medical School (2012). After research stays in South Africa, New Zealand and Australia and a teaching assignment at the Catholic University of Applied Sciences Mainz, Michel-Schuldt worked for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) from 2012 to 2016, including as a consultant for midwifery education in Bangladesh, as Technical Officer Midwifery in the Technical Division in Geneva, Switzerland, and as a consultant for the Cambodian Midwives Association in the country office in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. After further education and consulting activities, including for UNICEF, WHO and the Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit, Michaela Michel-Schuldt then obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) from the University of Technology, Australia, and the University of Dundee, Scotland, in 2021 with a thesis on "Midwife-led care in low- and middle-income countries." She has been teaching and researching midwifery science at Ludwigshafen University of Applied Sciences since September 2021.
Professor Michaela Michel-Schuldt focuses on the dual Bachelor's degree course in Midwifery Science, but is also involved in the Master's degree course in Innovative Care Practice in Nursing and Midwifery. Her education and research focus on care and health services research and the professionalization of midwifery. She also continues to be involved in research and development projects at an international level, particularly in relation to the provision of healthcare services, reproductive care, maternal and newborn care, the development of healthcare professionals and the training of midwives.
About the dual Bachelor's degree program in Midwifery Science:
The dual Bachelor's degree program in Midwifery Science is a primary qualifying degree program and is aimed at all prospective students who want to learn the profession of midwifery. The prerequisite is a qualification for university entrance (Abitur, entrance qualification for universities of applied sciences or a previous qualification recognized as equivalent) or successful completion of vocational training in health and nursing. The theoretical study phases take place at the university and are supplemented by practical learning units in modern skills and simulation rooms. The practical study phases alternate with the theoretical study phases at the clinical and non-clinical cooperation partners: These include practical placements in the delivery room, the antenatal outpatient clinic, the postnatal ward and the children's clinic, as well as non-clinical placements with freelance midwives, in birth centers or midwifery practices. Students receive a salary throughout the course.
The seven-semester course will replace training at midwifery schools in future as a result of the 2019 amendment to the Midwifery Act as part of the academization of the healthcare professions: These will be allowed to start a midwifery training course for the last time in 2022. From 2023, midwives will only be able to learn the profession at colleges and universities. The midwifery science degree program concludes with the academic degree Bachelor of Science and a state license to practice midwifery .
Application for the winter semester 2022/2023 is possible from May 1, 2022. The next online information event for prospective students will take place on April 13 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
