Dimensions of Diversity Relevant to Learning

The heterogeneity of students and student groups is omnipresent for educators. However, for a successful learning and educational process, the question arises as to which heterogeneity factors actually have an impact on learning and academic success. Different heterogeneity characteristics can therefore be relevant to learning in different ways. Both individual factors (interests and inclinations, attitudes towards studying, learning and examination strategies, etc.) and social factors (educational and cultural background, social environment and financial opportunities, etc.) play a role here. Psychological characteristics and cognitive abilities, characteristics relating to the organization of learning and motivational characteristics are also classified as relevant to learning. The main challenge for educators is to find methods and approaches that take into account certain aspects of diversity that are relevant to learning. However, these learning-relevant characteristics should not be seen as a difficulty or problem in the learning and teaching process, but rather as an opportunity to support students in their individual talents and to raise their potential.
