AI project "CopML" receives funding from the Carl Zeiss Foundation

As part of the Carl Zeiss Foundation's research start-up program, Prof. Dr. Maximilian Coblenz, Professor of Information Systems at the Department of Services and Consulting at HWG LU, has been awarded funding of €148,000 for his project "CopML: Copulas in Machine Learning". The research project is part of the thematic focus on artificial intelligence (AI) and will run for two years. Funding begins in July 2023.

About CopML
The modeling of dependency structures and probability distributions plays a central role in data analysis, particularly in machine learning. Copulas are an excellent tool from classical statistics for this purpose. These allow probability distributions to be cleverly decomposed in such a way that modeling is simplified overall. As copulas themselves are probability distributions, they can also be used to simulate new data. They are also suitable for use with high-dimensional data. Due to these properties, copulas are already attracting increasing attention in the field of machine learning. The aim of the research project Copulas in Machine Learning (CopML) is to further link copulas and machine learning methods. On the one hand, the potential applications of copulas in machine learning are to be investigated. On the other hand, machine learning methods that enable the modeling of copulas themselves are to be explored.

About the Carl Zeiss Foundation
The Carl Zeiss Foundation has set itself the goal of creating scope for scientific breakthroughs. As a partner of excellent science, it supports basic research as well as application-oriented research and education in the STEM Departments (Mathematics, Informatics, Natural Sciences and Technology). Founded in 1889 by the physicist and mathematician Ernst Abbe, the Carl Zeiss Foundation is one of the oldest and largest private science-promoting foundations in Germany. It is the sole owner of Carl Zeiss AG and SCHOTT AG. Its projects are financed from the dividends distributed by the two foundation companies.
