Wine as a connecting element: Successful alumni network meeting in Neustadt

Did you know that per capita wine consumption in Germany is on the decline? The participants of the HWG LU alumni wine tasting last Friday may not fully understand this trend, because they all had one thing in common - a passion for wine.

And on this evening, they were able to experience it in all its diversity in the auditorium at the Neustadt wine campus: White, rosé, orange, red and predominantly from the Palatinate - a total of 14 wines, each thematically arranged in pairs of two, were poured for the 30 guests of the association "Friends of the Ludwigshafen University of Business and Society e.V." to taste. To get them in the right mood, they were served something sparkling beforehand. The noble drops had selected Professor Dr. Dominik Durner from the wine campus in Neustadt, who led the wine tasting in a knowledgeable and entertaining manner, provided interesting details about each sample and, in the course of the three-hour event, gave his audience a wealth of interesting facts about wine: For example, that the Palatinate produces more than 60 grape varieties, what PIWI wines are and why rosé is in vogue, what the sustainability of German wine is like, what actually constitutes a "vegan" wine, what challenges climate change poses for viticulture and what the industry is doing to adapt to it, or even how it is adapting to the needs of Generation Z.

Even supposed wine connoisseurs were able to learn something: "It was indeed a nice and at the same time instructive evening. I'm not quite a bloody beginner when it comes to wine, but tonight I learned a lot more. Wine, ... a science. I had never suspected that to this extent before," summed up Bertold Paul, who graduated from the Ludwigshafen University of Applied Sciences as early as 1973 and recently joined the sponsoring association.

At the end of the evening, Tatjana Kamrad, chairwoman of the sponsoring association and thus host of the scientific wine tasting, was particularly pleased that the topic of wine had succeeded in bringing together students, alumni and members of the sponsoring association in a successful network meeting - and, quite incidentally, in informing them about the activities and tasks of the association.

You can find out more about these activities apart from wine tasting at https://www.hwg-lu.de/hochschule/alumni/foerderer-der-hwg-lu-ev.
