Coaching as an important methodological approach in personnel development and employee management

Guest lecture by Prof. Dr. Anton Wengert in the International Personnel Management and Organization (IPO) degree programs

As part of the courses on personnel development and personnel management in the 6th semester of the IPO degree programs with Prof. Dr. Peter Mudra, Prof. Dr. Anton Wengert took the students on a journey into the cosmos of coaching as a guest speaker at the end of the summer semester 2024.

In addition to the important theoretical and conceptual building blocks and their significance for HR practice, Prof. Wengert used various exercises to show the students in particular the relevance and potential of coaching as a reflection, advice and intervention approach in the professional and personal sphere. The focus was particularly on the function of the coaching process for later professional practice, and the widely accepted classification was used here, according to which a coaching process is above all a change process that includes all activities and tools that determine the course of the process, from problem recognition and processing in the form of solution approaches to application in designated systems. The coaching process should be planned, implemented and finally reviewed by means of a strategy. The four-phase model of systemic coaching by König & Volmer, which consists of the orientation phase, clarification phase, change phase and final phase and is well suited to practice, was examined in detail during the course.

For the students, most of whom will soon find themselves in responsible professional roles in the world of work, the half-day exploration of the various forms of coaching was extremely valuable, as the very positive feedback underlined. In particular, the opportunity for individual self-reflection and the provision of professional feedback by Prof. Wengert were seen as important elements with personal added value.

Prof. Wengert is a trained coach, supervisor and organizational consultant and worked as a professor of personnel management at HWG Ludwigshafen for over 13 years. He was head of the Bachelor IPO and Master IHRM courses for many years.
